SEATTLE
a study in black & white
This project involved the new construction of a 2400 SF home on an existing 1950s foundation. The existing home could no longer meet the family's needs with crowded living/eating spaces and inadequate bedrooms. The design goals for the new work included: an open living/ dining / kitchen space with a casual flow, new master bedroom suite with master bath and walk-in closet, guest room and backyard living space.

The massing of the new home was carefully considered to avoid creating the "big box" feel of many newly constructed homes in this neighborhood. We broke down the volumes into smaller spaces that shift forwards and backwards to add visual interest and a human scale at the street facade. A study of black and white materials highlights the shifting volumes. This exploration of contrast continued in the interior design informing the finish material palettes.
